Sometime in the 19th century, children would dress up for Halloween and go trick-or-treating in a different way than we all know and love. Children of the UK and Midwest would offer tricks for treats. That means they would have to entertain someone to get money or fruit, just knocking on someone's door and getting candy wasn't the deal. So instead of 'trick or treat', kids said 'trick for treat.'
