BRCA1 is a genetic defect that makes people more prone to breast and ovarian cancer. 39-year-old Dan knew it ran in his family but never wanted to get tested because he valued not knowing more than knowing something was wrong. Not knowing had one bad side to it: “Every little ache and pain would suddenly have me at the doctor, begging for detailed tests.”
